Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now. The simple past is the basic form of past tense in English. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant past and action duration is not important.

සරල අතීත කාලය මීට පෙර කාලයක සම්පූර්ණ කරන ලද ක්‍රියාවක් ගැන කතා කිරීමට භාවිතා කරයි. සරල අතීතය යනු ඉංග්‍රීසියෙන් අතීත කාලයෙහි මූලික ස්වරූපයයි. ක්‍රියාවේ කාලය මෑත අතීතයේ හෝ ඈත අතීතයේ විය හැකි අතර ක්‍රියා කාලය වැදගත් නොවේ.


You always use the simple past when you say when something happened, so it is associated with certain past time expressions

යමක් සිදු වූ විට ඔබ පවසන විට ඔබ සැමවිටම සරල අතීතය භාවිතා කරයි, එබැවින් එය ඇතැම් අතීත කාල ප්‍රකාශන සමඟ සම්බන්ධ වේ


  • frequency: often, sometimes, always (බොහෝ විට, සමහර විට, සෑම විටම)
    I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.
    I often brought my lunch to school.

  • මම සමහර වෙලාවට දවල් කෑම වෙලාවට ගෙදර ගියේ.

  • මම නිතරම මගේ දිවා ආහාරය පාසලට ගෙන ආවා.


  • a definite point in time: last week, yesterday, six weeks ago (නිශ්චිත වේලාවක්: පසුගිය සතියේ, ඊයේ, සති හයකට පෙර)
    We saw a good film last week.
    Yesterday, I arrived in Geneva.
    She finished her work at seven o'clock
    I went to the theatre last night

  • ගිය සතියේ අපි හොඳ චිත්‍රපටියක් දැක්කා.

  • ඊයේ මම ජිනීවා ආවා.

  • ඇය රාත්‍රී හතට වැඩ නිම කළාය

  • මම ඊයේ රෑ තියටර් එකට ගියා


  • an indefinite point in time: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago (කාලය තුළ අවිනිශ්චිත ලක්ෂ්‍යයක්: අනෙක් දින, යුග ගණනාවකට පෙර, බොහෝ කලකට පෙර)
    People lived in caves a long time ago.
    She played the piano when she was a child.

  • බොහෝ කලකට පෙර මිනිසුන් ජීවත් වූයේ ගුහාවල ය.

  • ඇය කුඩා කාලයේ පියානෝව වාදනය කළාය.


Note: the word ago is a useful way of expressing the distance into the past. It is placed after the period of time: a week ago, three years ago, a minute ago.

 ago යන වචනය අතීතයට ඇති දුර ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමේ ප්‍රයෝජනවත් ක්‍රමයකි. එය කාල සීමාවෙන් පසුව තබා ඇත: සතියකට පෙර, වසර තුනකට පෙර, විනාඩියකට පෙර.



Positive: I studied English a year ago.

Question: Did you study English last year ?

Negative: I did not study English last year.

Negative/Question: Didn’t you study English last year ?


Positive: She invited me for dinner.

Question: Did She invite me for dinner ?

Negative: She did not invite me for dinner.

Negative/Question: Didn’t She invite me for dinner?

Usage of "should" in speaking

 The modal verb "should" is used in speaking to convey several different ideas: Advice or Recommendation: "Should" is commonly used to give advice or make recommendations.    - "You should see a doctor if you're feeling unwell."    - "I think you should apologize to her for what you said."   We use the future perfect continuous form when we are looking back to the past from a point in the future and we want to emphasise the length or duration of an activity or event: අනාගතයේ යම් කාලයකදී සිදුවෙමින් පැවතී අවසන් වන ක්‍රියාවක් ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමට In September the head teacher will have been teaching at the school for 20 years.
