Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now. It is used to make it clear that one event happened before another in the past. It does not matter which event is mentioned first - the tense makes it clear which one happened first.

අතීත පරිපූර්ණ යන්නෙන් අදහස් කරන්නේ පෙර කාලයට වඩා පෙර කාලයකි. අතීතයේ එක් සිදුවීමකට පෙර තවත් සිදුවීමක් සිදු වූ බව පැහැදිලි කිරීමට එය භාවිතා වේ. කුමන සිදුවීම මුලින්ම සඳහන් කළත් කමක් නැත - ආතතියෙන් පැහැදිලි වන්නේ කුමන සිදුවීම පළමුව සිදු වූවාද යන්නයි.


Event A is the event that happened first and Event B is the second or more recent event:

සිදුවීම A යනු පළමුව සිදු වූ සිදුවීම වන අතර B සිදුවීම දෙවන හෝ මෑත කාලීන සිදුවීම වේ.

Event A: John had gone out

Event B: when I arrived at the office.

සිද්ධිය A: ජෝන් පිටතට ගොස් ඇත

සිදුවීම B: මම කාර්යාලයට පැමිණි විට.


Event A: I had saved my document

Event B: before the computer crashed.

සිද්ධිය A: මම මගේ ලේඛනය සුරකින ලදී

සිදුවීම B: පරිගණකය බිඳ වැටීමට පෙර.


Positive: I had locked the gate when Amal arrived.

Question: Had you locked the gate when Amal arrived ?

Negative: I had not locked the gate when Amal arrived.

Negative/Question: Hadn’t you locked the gate when Amal arrived ?


Positive: She had left him before he decided to quit alcohol.

Question: Had she left him before he decided to quit alcohol ?

Negative: She had not left him before he decided to quit alcohol.

Negative/Question: Hadn’t she left him before he decided to quit alcohol ?

  We use the future perfect continuous form when we are looking back to the past from a point in the future and we want to emphasise the length or duration of an activity or event: අනාගතයේ යම් කාලයකදී සිදුවෙමින් පැවතී අවසන් වන ක්‍රියාවක් ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමට In September the head teacher will have been teaching at the school for 20 years.
