Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous is used:

  • to describe an action that is going on at this moment: 

  • මේ මොහොතේ සිදුවන ක්‍රියාවක් විස්තර කිරීමට:


  • You are using the Internet. 

  • You are studying English grammar.

  • ඔබ අන්තර්ජාලය භාවිතා කරයි.

  • ඔබ ඉංග්‍රීසි ව්‍යාකරණ ඉගෙන ගන්නවා.



  • to describe an action that is going on during this period of time or a trend: 

  • මෙම කාල සීමාව තුළ සිදුවන ක්‍රියාවක් හෝ ප්‍රවණතාවක් විස්තර කිරීමට:


  • Are you still working for the same company? 

  • More and more people are becoming vegetarian.

  • ඔබ තවමත් එම ආයතනයේම සේවය කරනවාද?

  • වැඩි වැඩියෙන් මිනිසුන් නිර්මාංශ බවට පත්වෙමින් තිබේ.


  • to describe an action or event in the future, which has already been planned or prepared: 

  • දැනටමත් සැලසුම් කර ඇති හෝ සකස් කර ඇති අනාගතයේ ක්‍රියාවක් හෝ සිදුවීමක් විස්තර කිරීමට:

  • We're going on holiday tomorrow.

  • I'm meeting my boyfriend tonight. 

  • Are they visiting you next winter?

  • අපි හෙට නිවාඩුවක් යනවා.

  • මම අද රෑ මගේ පෙම්වතා හමුවෙනවා.

  • ඊළඟ ශීත ඍතුවේ දී ඔවුන් ඔබ වෙත පැමිණෙනවාද?



  • to describe a temporary event or situation: 

  • තාවකාලික සිදුවීමක් හෝ තත්වයක් විස්තර කිරීමට:


  • He usually plays the drums, but he's playing bass guitar tonight. 

  • The weather forecast was good, but it's raining at the moment.

  • ඔහු සාමාන්‍යයෙන් ඩ්‍රම්ස් වාදනය කරයි, නමුත් ඔහු අද රාත්‍රියේ බේස් ගිටාර් වාදනය කරයි.

  • කාලගුණ අනාවැකිය හොඳයි, නමුත් මේ මොහොතේ වැස්ස.



  • with "always, forever, constantly", to describe and emphasise a continuing series of repeated actions: 

  • "සැමවිටම, සදහටම, නිරතුරුව" සමඟ, අඛණ්ඩව නැවත නැවත කරන ක්‍රියා මාලාවක් විස්තර කිරීමට සහ අවධාරණය කිරීමට:


  • Harry and Sally are always arguing! 

  • You're constantly complaining about your mother-in-law!

  • හැරී සහ සාලි නිතරම වාද කරනවා!

  • ඔබ ඔබේ නැන්දම්මා ගැන නිතරම පැමිණිලි කරනවා!

Positive : I am going to the bus-stand.

Negative : She is not going home.

Negative Question : Isn’t she going home ?

Usage of "should" in speaking

 The modal verb "should" is used in speaking to convey several different ideas: Advice or Recommendation: "Should" is commonly used to give advice or make recommendations.    - "You should see a doctor if you're feeling unwell."    - "I think you should apologize to her for what you said."
